Substitute Plans¶
Create emergency lesson plans for when you are away.
What You Get¶
A complete substitute-ready plan with clear instructions, activities that do not require deep subject knowledge, timing, and notes for the substitute teacher. The plan includes classroom management tips and relevant student context so the substitute can step in with confidence.
Inputs¶
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Subject | The subject area |
| Grade level | Your students' grade |
| Duration | How long the lesson needs to cover |
| Class context | What students have been working on recently |
| Specific requirements | Any constraints or must-include items (optional) |
How to Create a Substitute Plan¶
- Open the Substitute Plans assistant
- Enter the subject, grade level, and duration
- Describe what your class has been working on -- this helps generate activities that fit naturally into your current sequence
- Add any specific requirements (e.g., "no screen time", "must include a writing activity")
- Tap Generate
- Review the plan and adjust as needed
- Export and share with your substitute
What the Plan Includes¶
- Lesson overview -- A brief summary for the substitute
- Timing -- A schedule broken into manageable chunks
- Activities -- Self-contained activities that do not require specialist knowledge
- Materials needed -- What the substitute will need to gather
- Classroom management notes -- Routines, expectations, and student context
- Early finisher activities -- Backup tasks for students who finish quickly
- Emergency contacts -- Space for you to add who the substitute should contact with questions
Tips¶
- Prepare in advance -- Generate a few generic substitute plans at the start of the year so they are ready when you need them
- Add class context -- The more you share about what students have been working on, the more relevant the activities will be
- Include routines -- Add notes about your classroom routines (how students line up, where supplies are, behaviour expectations) to the plan after generating
- Keep it simple -- Substitute plans work best when activities are straightforward and self-contained
- Export as PDF -- A printed copy is the most reliable format for a substitute to follow
