Voice Capture¶
Premium Feature
Voice Capture is available on the Premium plan.
Voice Capture lets you record quick observations during your teaching day instead of writing them down later. Tap the microphone, speak, and Mossie handles the rest -- transcription, student detection, subject linking, and filing the note in the right place.
Teachers think in fragments while teaching. You notice something about a student, have an idea for tomorrow, or need to remember a follow-up. Voice Capture bridges the gap between noticing and documenting.
How It Works¶
- Record -- Tap the microphone and speak your observation
- Transcribe -- Mossie converts your speech to text automatically
- Detect -- Student names and subjects are identified from your words
- Link -- The note is matched to the correct student and subject in your Classroom
- Save -- A performance note is created under the student's profile
The entire process takes seconds. You speak, Mossie organizes.
Entity Recognition¶
Mossie listens for student names and subject references in your recordings and matches them to your Classroom data.
Student Detection¶
When you say a student's name, Mossie matches it against your student roster:
"Emma showed great improvement in reading today"
Mossie detects "Emma" and links the note to Emma's profile in your Classroom.
If you mention multiple students, each gets their own linked note:
"Emma helped Jake with the maths problem during group work"
Both Emma and Jake receive notes.
Subject Detection¶
Mossie also detects subject references:
"Great progress in science today"
Mossie identifies "science" and links the note to the corresponding subject.
Confidence Matching¶
Mossie uses confidence scores for matching:
- Above 80% confidence -- The match auto-links without asking you
- Below 80% confidence -- Mossie shows you the suggested match and asks you to confirm or correct it
This prevents incorrect links while keeping the process fast for clear matches.
Capture Types¶
Each voice note is classified into one of three types:
| Type | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Student Note | An observation about a specific student's behavior, progress, or participation |
| Activity Log | A record of a class activity, event, or session |
| General Note | Anything else -- ideas, reminders, reflections |
You can select the type before recording, or let Mossie classify it automatically based on the content.
Where You Can Capture¶
Voice Capture works across all your devices:
iPhone and Android¶
- From the Home screen, tap the microphone in Quick Capture
- Speak your observation
- Tap Stop
- Review the transcription and detected entities
- Confirm and save
iPad¶
Quick Capture is always visible at the top of the Home screen. The workflow is the same as on phone.
Apple Watch¶
- Open Mossie on your watch
- Tap Record
- Speak your note
- Tap Stop
- Review on the watch or later on your phone
- Confirm entities and save
The watch is ideal for capturing observations during recess, PE, or any time you are away from your desk. See the Apple Watch guide for more details.
Wear OS¶
- Open Mossie on your Wear OS watch
- Tap Record
- Speak and stop
- Review and confirm
See the Wear OS guide for more details.
Siri¶
Say: "Hey Siri, capture a note in Mossie"
Mossie opens and begins recording. See the Siri Shortcuts guide.
Alexa¶
Say: "Alexa, tell Mossie to capture a note"
Your voice is recorded and sent to Mossie for processing. See the Alexa guide.
Google Assistant¶
Say: "Hey Google, capture a note in Mossie"
See the Google Assistant guide.
Offline Support¶
Voice Capture works without an internet connection:
- Recordings are stored locally on your device
- Transcription happens when you reconnect -- recordings are queued and processed automatically
- Notes sync to your account once processing is complete
On Apple Watch, captures sync via your paired iPhone.
You will see a pending captures indicator showing how many recordings are waiting to be processed.
Tips for Better Results¶
- Speak clearly -- Enunciate student names, especially unusual or similar-sounding names
- Use student names explicitly -- "Emma did well today" is better than "she did well today"
- Keep recordings brief -- 10 to 30 seconds is ideal. Longer recordings still work but shorter ones are faster to process and review
- Reduce background noise -- Step away from noisy areas when possible. The microphone picks up everything
- Be specific -- "Emma solved the fractions worksheet independently and got 9 out of 10" is more useful than "Emma did well in maths"
- Include the subject -- "In science, Jake asked excellent questions about the water cycle" helps Mossie link the note correctly
Troubleshooting¶
Poor transcription quality¶
- Move away from background noise
- Hold the device closer to your mouth (or speak more directly into your watch)
- Speak at a natural pace -- too fast can reduce accuracy
Student not recognized¶
- Check that the student is in your Classroom roster
- Try spelling the name: "E-M-M-A"
- On the confirmation screen, manually select the correct student from the dropdown
Notes not syncing¶
- Check your internet connection
- Open the app to trigger a sync
- Look for the pending captures indicator -- if it shows a number, recordings are waiting for connectivity
