Custom Assistants

Build your own AI tools for recurring tasks that the built-in assistants do not cover.

Premium Feature

Custom Assistants are available on the Premium plan.

Why Custom Assistants?

Every teacher has unique workflows. Built-in assistants handle common tasks like lesson plans and assessments, but you might need something specific to your school or routine:

  • Friday Family Connect -- A weekly newsletter to parents
  • Daily Reflection -- A personal teaching journal
  • Class Connect -- A daily session plan based on school values
  • Term Handover -- End-of-term notes for the next teacher

Custom Assistants let you create purpose-built AI tools for these recurring tasks.

Creating a Custom Assistant

  1. Navigate to Custom Assistants (in the sidebar or from your Workspace)
  2. Tap Create New
  3. Configure the assistant:

Name and Description

  • Name -- What you will call it (e.g., "Friday Family Connect")
  • Description -- A short summary of what it does

Instructions

Write detailed instructions for the AI. Be specific about tone, length, structure, and what to include or exclude. The more precise your instructions, the better the output.

Write a warm, professional newsletter to parents summarizing
this week's class activities. 300-500 words. Include highlights,
upcoming events, and a positive tone. Use my writing style.
Sign off with my name.

Input Fields

Define what information you provide each time you run the assistant.

Field Type Use For
Text Short input (e.g., "Topic", "Student name")
Text Area Longer input (e.g., "Special highlights", "Notes")
Select Dropdown choices (e.g., "Tone: formal / casual")
Date Date selection (e.g., "Week ending")

Context Sources

Choose what data Mossie should automatically include when running the assistant:

  • Activity Log -- Recent class activities and notes
  • School Policies -- Relevant policy documents from your Knowledge Base
  • Curriculum -- Curriculum standards and content
  • Date Range -- Scope the context: Today, This week, This term

Output Format

Choose how the result is structured:

  • Document -- Saved as a full document
  • Structured text -- Formatted with headings and sections
  • Free text -- Unstructured output

Frequency

Indicate how often you use this assistant. This helps Mossie suggest it at the right time:

  • Ad-hoc
  • Daily
  • Weekly
  • Term
  • Term-start
  • Term-end
  • Before-report-due

Example: Friday Family Connect

Here is a complete example of a custom assistant configuration:

Name: Friday Family Connect

Description: Weekly parent newsletter summarizing class activities

Instructions:

Write a warm, professional newsletter to parents summarizing this
week's class activities. 300-500 words. Include highlights, upcoming
events, and a positive tone. Use my writing style.

Input fields:

  • Special highlights (Text Area, optional)
  • Upcoming events (Text Area, optional)

Context sources:

  • Activity Log (this week)

Frequency: Weekly

Using It

Every Friday:

  1. Open the Friday Family Connect assistant
  2. Add any special highlights or upcoming events
  3. Tap Generate
  4. Review and edit the newsletter
  5. Copy to your email or export as a document

Using Custom Assistants in Workflows

Custom Assistants can be used as nodes in Workflows. This lets you automate the entire process:

  1. Connect a context source to your assistant
  2. Connect the assistant output to a "Create Document" node
  3. Schedule the workflow (e.g., every Friday at 3 PM)

The workflow runs automatically, generating a draft document you can review when you are ready.

Workflow vs Standalone

In workflows, assistants only generate content -- you need a "Create Document" node to save the result. When used standalone, assistants create documents directly.

Tips

  • Start specific -- Detailed instructions produce better results than vague ones
  • Test and iterate -- Run the assistant, review the output, then refine the instructions
  • Use context sources -- Activity logs and school policies add real data to the output, making it richer and more relevant
  • Keep instructions updated -- Adjust your instructions as your needs change throughout the year
  • Combine with Voice Learning -- If you have Voice Learning enabled, your custom assistants will use your writing style automatically
